“If this pandemic has a silver lining, it’s that I’ve been able to spend more time with my grandchildren,” Sophie said. A Bedford homeowner, Sophie was in a position to step up and provide childcare for her son’s three children when the childcare center they normally attended closed. “They’re all under the age of five, and this is a really special time in their lives that I’m happy to be part of.”
“That being said, being able to get the kids out in the fresh air and sunshine is so important,” she continued. “Important and hard to manage. That’s why we had our Bedford decking contractor come in and upgrade the deck.”
Making a deck suitable for small children definitely includes making sure the kids have a shady retreat from the bright summer sun. “Our decking contractor provided us with a number of design options,” Sophie explained, “Including roofing part of the deck, creating a screen room on the deck, and building a three-season deck under the second-story balcony we have coming off the back of the house. The reason we went with a design/build firm to create our deck was to take advantage of this flexibility. We wanted to know all of our options before we made a decision.”
“We decided to go with the three-season porch because who knows how long this pandemic might go on?” Sophie said. “It’s nice and cool now, but when fall rolls around, the kids will probably enjoy being in out of the wind. The three-season porch has great windows all along one side, which means the kids can enjoy looking outdoors while staying safe, warm, and dry. It’s a great place for storytime. I love reading books with the grandkids out there.”
Other features that make decks great for grandkids include built-in storage for toys and a built-in sandbox. To learn more about what your design options are, contact your Bedford decking contractor today!
